Where fairness in medical care begins
Supporting and guiding victims of medical mishaps

Hitting the target.

Many patients and relatives do not succeed in getting the action they seek, simply because they miss the 'target'.

Getting action is like archery. If you want to hit a target, you need  at least:
  1. a bow,
  2. an arrow,
  3. someone to aim the arrow, and
  4. importantly 'the target'.

The target is actually the most important thing. Hitting the wrong target or missing the target entirely is a waste of time and energy.

My wife died in childbirth

"My wife died in childbirth a few weeks ago. It was totally unexpected. She went to all the antenatal classes and we did everything right. It was her first pregnancy. She was in labour for about 12 hours.

The baby's heartbeat started to go weak. Then the doctor began to look nervous and told us that it was going to be a section. My wife was in a state. So was I. They began opening up drips on her.

Clozapine caused me problems

"I was on a monthly injection that caused me bad shakes. I'm in hospital. My psychiatirst said I might develop slinesia or something like that. My legs would jerk occasionally. I agreed to go for a trial of clozapine to avoid getting this slinesia.

My psychiatrist kept me on the injections and started me on a small dose of clozapine.

Wrong kidney removed

"I went for surgery a few months ago. The surgeon was polite and recommended by a family friend. I had a tumor in my right kidney. The doctor said I had to have surgery to remove the whole kidney, else there would be serious complications. I went along with that.

Funny turn messed up my life

I had a funny turn about 5 years ago. I had  a severe headache which was followed by left-sided weakness of my face, and some weakness of my left arm.

My GP said this was a TIA, which is a some temporary loss of blood supply to the brain.

In a nutshell, the DVLA got wind of this and suspended my driver's licence. My business was always in sales, which required me to be on the road a lot of the time.

He's possessed by demons.

My son, now 25, had been complaining of feeling possessed for the last 6 months or so. He would complain that he was hearing the voice of the devil, telling him to do some rather ghastly things. We thought it was a split-personality thing but my son insisted it was the voice of the devil.

At times his right arm would shoot up while we were having a meal. This is extremely inappropriate. He'd say that the devil made him do it. This would erupt in an argument because we would say 'don't be daft'.

My life is a mess

"My life crumbled at age 35. I was a mother of 3, holding down a decent job as a teacher. I had a funny turn that was proved not to be due to a brain disorder. However, following the advice of my GP I reported the incident to the DVLA who then suspended my driver's licence. I could not go to work or do my usual activities. I had to resign. I fell into depression. It was so bad I took an overdose and ended up sectioned to a psych unit. They gave me prozac. I improved after about 2 months.

Bad examination.

We give some broad guidance on a very difficult but not uncommon situation.

"I went to see my doctor about a pain in my stomach, that went on for over two weeks. My doctor asked if he could examine me. I thought nothing of it as this is what I thought would happen.

Misdiagnosed

My 5 year old daughter had been complaining of ear ache for several days. We went several times to the doctor but they did not give antibiotics. Eventually she got very ill. We took her to the A&E where she was admitted and put on a life support machine. She died a week after the incident. We're angry, sad and confused to say the least. What do we do now? Should we sue the doctors?

Our response:

We are deeply troubled by what has happened and share your sorrow.
